Granny is a horror adventure built around escaping the house of many rooms. You need to steal past the Granny to escape in five attempts, in the dark night. Play Granny if you like horrors and adventures, but somehow missed this one.
The idea of Granny is simple: you need to sneak out of the house while Granny can’t see you. She is so much stronger than you that you cannot resist if she finds you and hits you with a bat. She is suspicious enough to leave bear traps at entrances, so you cannot simply walk out. She keeps you in. You need to get out. You have five tries before she finally kills you.
The house is a trap, but it has its shelters, so you can hide under a bed or in a wardrobe. Then let the Granny go past you, and keep going. Stealth is the key: if she doesn’t notice you, you’re safe. But don’t let anything drop to the floor.
The game has no explanations about what’s behind the story, and that makes the nightmare even denser. Some moments made me hold my breath when I felt the danger near.
The game utilizes the traditional scheme for first-person adventures. You use the virtual joystick in the left lower corner to move, an area in the right part to move the camera, and an interaction button to grab objects or open doors. Sometimes you need to move as close as possible to the door for the button to appear, but that’s not much of a problem.
Replay Value 3/5
Horror adventures are just a bit better than point-and-click quests or puzzles that are only fun once. This time the Granny can be anywhere, and the AI behind her may act randomly, so you never predict her. So replaying really is some fun, at least, until you explore the entire house.
First of all, play it in the night. Second, turn off all the lights. Third, set your screen brightness to “manual”, and make it brighter if necessary. Fourth, prepare for the blood. It’s a very dark game, and this gloom contributes to the overall fearful atmosphere heavily. What can be seen is drawn quite roughly, but it’s okay for a nightmare vision.
The experience wouldn’t be complete without sounds. In this game the sounds matter. When you drop something on the floor, the Granny is here to drop you! You better put on your best headphones, and don’t confuse the channels, because stereo helps you to locate the Granny by sounds she makes.
If you like horrors, first-person adventures and slow-paced stealth games, Granny is a must play. This is a very good example of a stealth horror, and, as these games aren’t very replayable, every good one is too precious to neglect.
